Couldn't have said it better myself
"I think it's a nutty idea to fool around with the Social Security system and run the risk of [hurting] the people who've been saving all their lives.... It may be a new idea, but it's a dumb one."-- Vice President George Bush in 1987

Get busy living or get busy dying....
We have work to do, here are issue specific bullet points as to what the Bush budget is doing to Illinois. Some good letters to the editor can come out of this. Take a look......
Illinois residents are facing severe cuts if George Bush's new budget becomes law -- but you can help stop it in its tracks.
Bush recently unveiled his reckless plan to privatize Social Security, and now he's touting a budget that slashes key programs that help Illinois's working families.
Bush plans devastating cuts to America's top priorities, from homeland security to health care to education to benefits for veterans and much more. Despite these cuts, this budget is a fiscal disaster, with Bush's trademark irresponsibility pushing America deeper into the red with another record deficit.
And this budget is a huge disaster for Illinois. Here are just a few of the cuts Illinois faces under Bush's 2006 budget:
Homeland Security
The Bush 2006 budget cuts $420 million to state and local funding for homeland security, including a $35.3 million cut for Illinois. These cuts will take police and firefighters off your streets.
The Bush budget cuts the COPS program, which has put 5,854 officers on Illinois streets, by 96 percent.
Health Care
The Bush budget cuts $45 billion from Medicaid, enough to provide health care to 1.8 million children. Illinois's share of these cuts is $1.3 billion.
Bush's budget cuts the very same community and rural health care programs he touted during the campaign, even though more than 114,000 Illinois residents have lost their health care coverage since Bush took office due to his failures.
Education
Bush underfunds his own No Child Left Behind Act by $13.1 billion in his budget. In Illinois, that means a shortfall of $494.8 million, leaving behind 120,726 Illinois children.
Bush promised to fund Pell Grants in his State of the Union address, but his budget is $6.6 billion short. That's $251.8 million less than what's needed in Illinois, a real burden for the 189,475 students in Illinois who receive the grants.
Other Priorities
Bush cuts $22.9 million from Illinois job training programs in his 2006 budget.
The Bush budget would require many veterans to pay a new $250 annual "user fee" to use the Veterans Administration health care system, and would double the prescription drug co-payment for the 1,003,572 Illinois veterans.
Bush cuts Illinois clean water programs by $17.5 million.
Bush's 2006 budget also cuts the Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program -- which helps low-income families afford heating fuel in the winter -- by $234.4 million, including $13.4 million cut for Illinois residents.
And Bush's irresponsible budget is a record $427 billion in the red, increasing each Illinois family's share of the federal debt by $37,405.

On the lighter side of things
Hey everyone, Now I know you probably haven't heard much about this, but apparently there are Student Elections going on right now. I was unaware of the fact until I noticed our beloved exec board member Josh Garrison on the cover of today's Daily Vidette looking all Presidential. Needless to say if you haven't voted already I guess you should probably do so. I got handed a business card and when reading I found out that apparently I'm on the ticket too! As are Marie and Nick.
We agreed on new t-shirts at our last meeting. For those of you who weren't there, they will be pretty sweet. Expect them hopefully by the end of the month, prices to come.
Republican Congressman Ray Lahood was recently in town to promote a very worthwhile reading program and praised ISU. This guy isn't half bad, besides he doesn't really have to worry about what we do with those domain names since when we're all Democrats.
For a good laugh I recommend the book Clinton and Me by Mark Katz, check it out over spring break. This guy was a humor speech writer for Clinton, which wasn't always the easiest thing to do when you weren't making jokes at Clinton's expense. You can't read this book for 5 minutes without laughing out loud.
That's all for now,
Logan
