Not in a Calvinistic pre-determination BS sort of way, but one where you make decisions that at first seem a little out of place or out of your comfort zone, but then you grown because of it. This morning I woke up cold because it was 32 degrees outside, went to my computer and figured, "Lets see what movies are playing" Wanting to see Capitalism: A Love Story I found it playing, at a theater 45 minutes away, at 10:15. All of which seemed like, why would I want to do that? But I decided to get ready and go for the early showing.

I won't write my review for Capitalism here, but let me just say these few words about it. This is by far one of the most important films of the decade. Regardless of your political beliefs, religious beliefs, economic beliefs, and any other dogma which has been fed to you; you will come out of this movie mad and ready to see things changed. I looked at the world from a little better of a perspective that moment actually being able to synthesize the message which was portrayed in the film.

After the movie I stopped to pick up some supplies for my classroom since some punk kid stole all of my grading pens. After that I went to Barnes and Noble since it is Teacher Appreciation Week and they were having a huge sale for educators. Couldn't find anything I really cared for, but mostly stuff I already own. However I did run into someone I knew from back home who wanted me to come speak to a couple of her students about the Peace Corps. She knew I was going in and really wanted someone to speak to these students about the program and what to expect. She teaches at an alternative school where many of these students have little or no opportunity to leave where the come from and any chance I could have at helping these students along would be well worth it.

I decided then to go to the mall for some lunch and outside of the mall was a homeless man asking for some change. I asked him if he wanted to get some food and out of the cold. He said yes and as we were entering a mall security guard stopped him and said he cannot loiter inside the mall. I told the cop we were going to get some food and he is not loitering if he is a patron if the mall. He stepped aside and we went to Panera to eat. We got out food and I had one of the greatest conversations in my life. Found out this man's name was Dave, lost his job 2 years ago and had been searching ever since. He lost his home in the housing crisis, and his wife left him and took the kids. I talked to him about what I was doing with my life and what I would be doing in the future. That was about it for me, but I let him talk and after a couple cups of coffee and him telling me stories about his life since he lost his job I could see it was taking its toll.

I could see in Dave's eyes something I had never really seen before, total hopelessness. To this man America had failed him. He went to work everyday for 25 years at a plant only to be laid off because the board of directors weren't making enough money in his eyes. He tried and tried to find a job to sustain his family and mortgage but eventually that was a futile effort because in October of last year, the last plank in the floor supporting he and his family was taken out beneath him and his world crashed. I can never know that feeling but today I came the closest I have ever been to feeling that same mindset of total loss. I will never forget today's lunch by the window where I learned more about the area that I live in than from anything I have experienced in my life to this date. Most importantly, I will never forget Dave and what he taught me today.

I woke up today feeling cold and wanting to stay shut in all day and just watch a couple movies and finish up some school work. Instead I decided to go to that early showing and because of that I had probably one of the most educational days of my life. If I wasn't at the right place at the right time, I may have never ran into that person from my hometown, I would have never had the possibility of going to that school and hopefully getting those two girls on the right path to serve in the Peace Corps. And if I did not decided to go to lunch up in Joliet and just go home and eat, I would have never met Dave and heard the story of someone who lost it all. Hopefully to him today meant a tenth of what it meant to me because maybe that could give him just a little bit more hope to keep fighting and trying to find work.

When I left Panera today and Dave stood outside the door with his cup of coffee, I shook his hand and told him "Just go for whatever it is you want, because you're the only one who can do it". I don't know whether or not he took to heart what I had said, but I hope he is willing to take things into his own hands and get back the life he, and every person in the world, deserves.

*******************************************************************************

The views and opinions expressed in this post constitute the opinion of the author alone and do not necessarily express the view of the ISU College Democrats, its executive board, and/or any other organization members.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-26780982080511272942009-08-12T23:48:00.002-05:002009-08-13T00:09:18.228-05:00When Politics Turns ViolentSo as the debate on health care reform wages I have to look at one aspect of this which really makes me fear for my country and the direction in which it is going. This may seem similar to a former posting in regards to election bantering and fear mongering trying to make people think President Obama was a Muslim, and even more outrageous, that being so was bad. I spoke out against Sen. McCain and at the time, and his lack of ability to quell these outrageous claims which could turn violent placing the now President’s life in danger.

But now this idea has been taken a step further during the debate on insurance reform. Right now, at least 4 congressman and senators have had death threats placed on their lives. Let me repeat that in case you didn’t catch that, they have HAD DEATH THREATS PLACED ON THEIR LIVES. With a past that has greatly harmed the political and social integrity of the United States before with assassinations of such leaders as Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley, John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy, Harvey Milk, and the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan this needs to be removed from the discussion immediately. Every single one of these killings or attempted killings has sent shockwaves through their respective communities while alienating and dividing the nation.

But this is not just a movement that has come from a grassroots, radical, right wing fringe. It has even been perpetuated by pundits gracing the screens of Fox News but even worse, from across the aisle from Republicans. First, lets look at the fine journalists at Fakes News. First, Glenn Beck. Recently he has stated that the reasoning behind the push for change including healthcare is part of a guise of reparations. I don’t even think I can form a response for that lunacy, other than to only point the sponsors who keep pulling ads from his show. In honesty though, the idea of bringing up reparations in this debate (which President Obama is openly against as he has stated before) has only one purpose, to play into the hands of those who see race as a division and play into the fear of those who have extreme racial tendencies (Neo-Nazi groups, KKK, etc.) But he even made the inference to poisoning Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi by poisoning the wine which they were sharing (which was really an intern/staffer wearing a Pelosi mask). So we see Glenn Beck openly joking about the murdering of an elected official. I thought he was pro-life? Well maybe he is for abortions in the 140th trimester, just not the first 3. Now if the idea of a democratically elected official being poisoned (although a joke) does throw the idea of political assassination into the realm of humor, should we be allowing this on the public stage?

Now we have Dick Morris who stated that “blue dog” Democrats needing to be, in his own words, “terrorized” into voting against this bill and against reform. It is interesting to see the party who used the fear of terrorism to act against our civil liberties now use the same people to terrorize elected officials. Let me state this to be clear. Regardless of your political views, this nation was formed on the basis of democratic transgression where through civil discourse we make our voices heard in regards to current issues. Terrorism is not civil discourse and works against everything this nation stands for. So to those who use terror tactics today, and claim they want their country back; from you, I want my country back.

Now we see politicians playing into the same tactics which are working against political reason and just spurning the hate-speak even more. Senator Chuck Grassley who has worked across the aisle to see healthcare reform passed and sensibly, has now switched to pandering to the crazies who think Obama will personally line up the old people of this nation and shoot them down himself. Stating that people “should be afraid” of the healthcare plan only adds to the hysteria which we are currently seeing in town halls across the nation. Taking a total 180 on his original stance, Grassley is treading a fine line of losing his base and with a fairly strong contender in 2010 Grassley could see this become his break issue because of his playing into the fear politics which for some reason has become standard operating procedure in the Republican Party.

Now the bigger issues which have been raised all work together to create a cocktail for destruction, not just disruption. Fear, racism, and terror tactics are all turning into devices which can only lead to one thing at the rate they are going, violence. I’m not using this as a way to spread fear, but that we as citizens need to recognize this not as democracy in action, but democratic inaction. But what we have seen is the threat of violence thus far. Yesterday in Portsmouth, NH where President Obama was holding a town hall of his own, there was a man who was standing outside with a gun strapped to his leg holding a sign reading “It is time to water the tree of liberty” in reference to Thomas Jefferson’s famous line stating that it is sometimes necessary for the tree of liberty to be watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Today, outside of a town hall held by a Democratic congressman, there was a man holding a sign stating “Death to Obama.”

What have we become? Are these people truly happy with the America they are willing to create? These are the same tactics which have been used the extremist pro-life movement to kill doctors who perform abortions, who face threats like this every day. And sometimes, as we just recently saw, they act much as how George Tiller was murdered as he attended church on May 31. We see references to Obama as Adolf Hitler or a Nazi, even Representative David Scott of Georgia receiving death threats calling himself and President Obama as niggers and vandalizing the sign to his office with a swastika.

What we are seeing is un-American. Regardless of party lines, using hate and terror to persuade people to vote against legislation is a mob action, the same way if unions went to go terrorize a Republican in voting against a bill. Now we what we as American’s need to do is stand up against this nonsense. I spoke last time about Bill Pierce who wrote The Turner Diaries which spoke of a racial civil war which inspired Tim McVeigh to bomb the federal building in Oklahoma City. By spurning this type of mindset, those who propose such things are just as guilty as those who commit the act in my eyes. Before this gets taken to far we as citizens must be willing to address this matter for what it truly is. In denying what is happening, we only allow it to fester like an infection, until it spreads to far from us to be able control and it takes over the once healthy body.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-79706304988732835122009-08-11T00:44:00.002-05:002009-08-11T00:48:28.039-05:00Change I Want To Believe In (Part 1)For nearly 2 years, I waited in anticipation for the inauguration of President Obama. When he announced his campaign in Springfield, I was excited beyond belief to hear about the change he would bring to Washington, D.C. For eight years, we had a president in office who for a lack of a better phrase, couldn’t care less about the average American, giving kick backs to his Dad’s old buddies, while making our nation less safe through his foreign policy.

A change in the way we did business with other countries was the thing I looked forward to most with President Obama. With a name which strikes chord’s in Africa and the Middle East, I knew he would be looked at differently than the “Good ol’ Boy” from Texas we had before. Now while his use of vernacular has helped our nations view abroad, his actions in my opinion, have not yet stood up to the change we have hoped for as a nation.

Let me begin by stating where we have gone right. The announcement of the closing of the prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba was a great moment for America. The largest propaganda piece which was created for extremists would be closed in a year. Next was the draw down of American troops from Iraq, which would eventually lead to a complete end to combat activities in that Middle Eastern nation. And finally and most recently, a changing of tone in the way we approach the current war. The War on Terror as well as many other Bush administration coined terms would no longer be used. This had moved from a cosmic war of good versus evil, to a war of the United States against Al’Qaeda.

Now, while these things seem great, have they really been the change we voted for and many volunteered for? Lets look deeper into these matters. First, I shall look at Guantanamo Bay. President Obama stated that while many would either be set free or tried by the legal system, President Obama kept the door open on two issues. First is the use of military tribunal even though some who have been in Gitmo for years are US citizens, or were arrested in the US and have had no direct ties to military action against the United States. Second and by far the most damning of this problem is the indefinite detention of inmates who are deemed to valuable to be sent to trial or be set free. Indefinite detention without legal cause is a crime against humanity and we as Americans should not stand for it. Now we have heard it will take longer than expected to close the prison. Now we don’t have a date of closure to look forward to. When now will this place be a part of our past as we look forward to the future? So now I ask the question, was this the change we were looking for in regards to Guantanamo Bay? Personally, I think not.

Next is the war in Iraq. The troop draw down as President Obama’s way of ending the war in Iraq is a joke. He’s basically changing the focus of the two wars back to Afghanistan while making Iraq the secondary war. There will be around 60,000 troops still in Iraq at the end of the drawback. As the only candidate who was opposed to the war from the start, while in the Illinois State Senate, Obama at the time made it clear that this was a “dumb war” which was against the nation security interests of the United States. So now I ask again, was this the end of the Iraq War we were looking for? Once again, I think not.

Lastly I want to discuss something which has not really been discussed in the news. The School of the Americas, or now so nicely renamed Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. For those of you who do not know what this is, it is a training school located at Fort Benning in Georgia where we train political dissidents from Latin America how to wage guerilla warfare. That is a blunt assessment of what they do but it is what they do. This is basically the Bay of Pigs invasion replayed time and time again, and once again sponsored at the behalf of American tax dollars. Last month, Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was overthrown in a coup recognized by every other “developed” western nation but not the United States.

So what does this have to do with President Obama and the School of the Americas? Two of the main leaders of this coup were trained at the School of the Americas and for some reason we in the United States refuse to recognize this as a coup. When you teach someone to kill, and they do kill, you cannot pretend you have had nothing to do with that act. The US is doing the same exact thing right now and even though President Obama was not around when they were trained at the SOA/WHISC, he now needs to recognize that this facility serves no purpose here in the United States or anywhere in the world. This is by far one of the most un-democratic aspects of America, yet it still exists. The School of the Americas needs to be closed down, much of the same way Gitmo is going to be (hopefully) closed down quite soon.

Now I write this entry as a supporter of President Obama. But I strongly feel that, as I have stated before, just because I worked to get someone elected does not mean I should trust everything they do. In fact I feel one should be more critical due to the time, effort, and money personally vested into political campaigns. I am critical because I know when someone I have respect for does not do right by me, I have to make it known or I am not doing that person or myself any favors. Things are getting better, but they could be so much greater if we focused on the real issues present instead of looking to appease both sides of the aisle. Not all people, Democrats or Republicans, have the right answers, but sometimes you need to just do what is in the best interests of the country regardless of party lines in order to ensure this nation lives up to its ideals.

Coming soon part 2 on domestic issues.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-31650183403882949292009-07-21T16:30:00.004-05:002009-07-21T18:10:02.923-05:00Republicans have officially gone over the deep end.So now that we have gone through the first 6 months of President Obama's presidency, we all know that Republicans have been searching for a way to rebrand themselves. So lets look at a couple of things which have come up in the news recently.

First on the Rachel Maddow Show...

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

So let me get this straight, Pat Buchanan feels that its ok that we only have white men serve because they were the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, etc? Oh yeah, and only white men died for this country. Apparently a Jim Crowe America is now the Republican America? Somehow, Republicans (Patty B in this instance) have managed to turn reverse discrimination against whites, back into blatant racism against minorities. I don't know how they managed to do that, but its like Marx proving capitalism is a great thing in the Communist Manifesto.

Now for something even more unbelievable...

Ok, so let me get this straight... he's not an American? Oh wait, but there's this...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 195px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8XULscXZhtA_yjW55VrLF0N2XLPz8BRBxMz4JO9hjesnWeHwybm1hTYK5zYy2iZcURq7SBu_TVXHc8Tlb8xN5xjLqlCA9w_Rm9XZsBtEOLKKpaK29esYgQxJbhjei9Pzp720n/s200/6a00d8341c630a53ef00e55350eb528833-800wi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361032231682563554" />

So now Bill Posey (R-FL) has introduced a bill which states that a candidate must present a birth certificate in order to run. But hey, this has nothing to do with the "birthers" who are not total crazies. So here is my question, why are Republicans not just doing the right thing, and saying he is a citizen, here is his birth certificate. (If by some odd chance a Republican is reading this, please refer to the photo above).

So now this begs the question, what's next for those pesky pachyderms? I feel like I'm looking at 9-11 conspiracy nuts or people who are Scientologists. I hear what your saying, but how can people actually believe that crap? They seem like a 5 year old who didn't get a toy when they went shopping with mommy and daddy and now they saying that the parents don't really love them. I have lost any and all possible faith in the Republican party. And yes, that means I had some faith in that they might actually become responsible adults who act mature. I went from having the mindset that bipartisanship should be striven for, to wanting to see all Republicans destroyed. That's right I said it, its time for the Republican party to go the way of Whigs, Federalists, and Democratic-Republicans. They hold no relevance in the nation today and right now serve no purpose other than to insight insanity.

Ok so where is this rant going. We need to be looking forward and dealing with things that matter in the country, not pandering to the fringe nutbags who question Obama's citizenship or who still think white people are the best and brightest in the nation. I feel like I'm watching a faux-reality of America where I am going to wake up from and realize that we still actually care about important issues. So now I say this to the Republican Party. Grow up, realize who is President and that the American people wanted him there. You are not helping anyone by what you are doing. It is time for us to be rid of you, be GONE!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-18106098658305328312009-02-03T12:20:00.004-06:002009-02-03T12:32:51.895-06:00Damn it, Democrats!Pay your taxes!

Tim Geithner, now Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer (not to mention Bill Richardson a few months ago) - you guys are making this way more difficult than it should be.

All the talk about responsibility, accountability, and you want to take my tax money (that is actually paid in full and on time every year) and hand it out to corporations and agencies whose merits are unproven?

Now, just for fun, I'm going to go through the list that was recently released by the GOP as projects included in Obama's bailout that they deemed to be wasteful spending. I will italicize the projects that I would like to see kept in. Renovations, furniture?? If Washington wants CEOs and "ordinary Americans" to take a few hits for the team, they ought to be able to wait a few more years to get those ergonomically designed mesh-fancy-pretty-comfy desk chairs they're dying for.

Furthermore, I have been to the NIH facilities in Bethesda and they are GORGEOUS. Interesting move; what will happen now?

Burris is a 71-year-old African American, and was in fact the first African American to be elected to a statewide office in Illinois in the 1978. He was the state comptroller and then the state AG beginning in 1990, and is currently in a private law practice.

Blagojevich is a criminal and is only appointing Burris because he's an arrogant twit trying to stay relevant and maintain a false front of innocence.

The Senate has said they will not seat anyone Blago appoints - not to say they won't take Burris BECAUSE Blago appoints him, but they won't take him without serious consideration.

Consider: Obama's seat (now empty) will be up for re-election in 2010, so whoever goes in now needs to fit one of two roles. Either a) the new Senator needs to be a solid placeholder for Illinois to produce a superior Senator for 2010, or b) he needs to be a solid Senator who can work for two years and win re-election in 2010. Burris will be a recognizable, positive name to Democrats older than us, and would probably be a good choice despite not being in that famous short list of a few weeks ago. It's entirely possible that, if seated, he could be re-elected in 2010.

Back to the Senate's reluctance to seat a Blago appointee... they are running out of options. I think this appointment today is just a stunt to generate talk and for the governor to try and flex whatever pathetic political muscle he thinks he has left. However, with just three weeks until the new congress is sworn in, the pressure should be on for the Senate to seat another Democrat just to solidify their majority, especially with the Minnesota race looking more and more likely to swing our way.

Plus, if the Joe LIEberman ordeal was any indication, Harry Reid is basically a bitch and the Senate will end up accepting Burris by the end of the week.

Thoughts?
KBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05374114280698935635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-6628704395176877512008-12-19T16:45:00.003-06:002008-12-19T17:13:45.341-06:00Hate: Part 2One of the most divisive things which still exists in our country became evident in this past Presidential election. Unfortunately race and racism still seem to be factors in the minds of Americans. We witnessed ignorance bleeding over into hate speech when people would talk about President-elect Obama. People looking at his race creating a palette for which they could create jokes about Kool-aid, fried chicken, and welfare. Have we not moved beyond the times of Jim Crow laws and lynch mobs which themselves looked at these stereotypes to be decisive qualities of one specific race?

"We've got a tragic history when it comes to race in this country. We've got a lot of pent-up anger and bitterness and misunderstanding. ... This country wants to move beyond these kinds of things."

When he said this during his now famous speech given on March 18, 2008 I could not agree more, but do we actually see this in America?

When we hear about a laborer losing his small business because of migrant workers providing cheap labor, what race comes to mind? A news story breaks that a government building has been bombed killing hundreds including women and children, what race comes to mind? A grocery store is robbed where the owner is shot by one of the robbers who then escaped, what race comes to mind?

My guess is that you thought of one particular race in each of those instances in your mind when you were picturing these events taking place. Are those views not a part of our society? Anyone of any race can fit into these scenarios depending on their situation which forces us to look at race internally first. We must look to ourselves to fight racism and blind hatred which still exists in today's society.

This now leads me to my final point. Sometimes racism boils over into a hatred so fierce we see the ugly side of our nation. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Brotherhood, and other neo-Nazi organizations show an unwavering hate I could never understand. But now I ask, when their discussion talks about "preservation of the white race through the elimination of inferior races and peoples" how can this be protected as free speech? Law is a balance between individual rights and public safety and where is the balance? A crazed skinhead goes into a Jewish community center and kills children in a daycare center, or chases down a group of white teenagers and beats them near death because one of their friends happens to be black, how can this ideology be protected under "free speech"? I ask these questions once again looking for a healthy dialogue to find common ground on where American really stands on this topic of racism.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-84727204007453109292008-12-16T16:07:00.002-06:002008-12-16T16:41:44.029-06:00Hate: Part 1So over the next few days I will be writing about something which I feel too many people look away from because of how severe it really can be. I will be looking at a few different issues related to specific groups of people. We may mask these issues with common phrases but they all boil down to one word, hate. Some may claim it as a lack of understanding, but those who look beyond the silver lining in everything know what these issues really come down to. These are my own opinions on the subject and I hope this spawns a further discussion because this is what is needed for these issues to be resolved.

Throughout the world's history, one idea has been something that has been debated for ages. If you ask someone what the definition of this idea is, they will never have the same two answers. It has perplexed even the most knowledgeable scholars and philosophers. It may be something of real world magic where there is no true explanation for why it happens. This thing which I am talking about is love. Now I am not going to talk about why or how it happens, but why some are not allowed to express that love.

"We must save the sanctity of marriage" as many people on the other side of this issue might say. What about divorce? It seems to me the ending of a marriage no matter who is involved with it, destroys the sanctity of marriage in a literal sense. Now to me I do not care on way or another what faith you are or if you even believe in a higher being. This debate has to be higher than that or else this is just an argument over who's imaginary friend is better.

To those who oppose gay marriage: What does it matter to you what two men or two women do at home? Why are they not allowed to share the same rights when it comes to hospital visitation if the person they have loved for their entire life is near death? Did Jesus say "Love thy neighbor as I have loved you"? Are you really loving your neighbor when you deny them the same rights as you?

To those who fight for the right to wed: Where is the passion over this issue? Why is there not a constant presence for all to see, showing what you are willing to do to gain those rights as your fellow citizens?

I am haunted by a bumper sticker that I saw the other day which states "No one is free while some are oppressed". I look back at November 4th now no loner as a day for celebration, but a black eye in the history of our nation. We made a vote for change through Barack Obama, yet across the nation, the right to marriage was denied to millions. We need to pressure the government to support the rights of all people regardless of sexual orientation and by standing by and not fighting for that right, we are just as guilty as those who oppress.

Part II coming 12/18Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-39757193819974930062008-12-09T10:44:00.004-06:002008-12-09T10:59:31.739-06:00Just when I thought it was OK to be from Illinois.

Rod, you've done it again! Our governor, Rod Blagojevich, was ARRESTED today on numerous counts of bribery and fraud. Not even, like, the cops called him up and said, "Rod, we know what you're doing, we need you to just come in." NO. They went and put him and his chief of staff in handcuffs and took them away.

According to the AP, there is a 76-page FBI affidavit listing all the charges.

Seventy-six pages.

The worst part is, these charges revolve around the appointment of a new Senator to take over for Barack Obama. Just when I was feeling proud about Illinois, when I was proud to be from the same state as someone who's doing something good in the world... Rod had to fuck it up.

He's accused, through evidance on wiretaps, of putting "a for sale sign on the naming of a United States senator," said Peter Fitzgerald, US Attorney. He would accept bribes in cash or in the form of jobs.

From the AP: "The affidavit said Blagojevich expressed frustration at being "stuck" as governor and that he would have access to greater resources if he were indicted while in the U.S. Senate than while sitting as governor."

Well, congratulations, Rod. Now you won't be able to put yourself in the Senate and you won't have to be a governor any more either. Sounds like a win-win for the voters of Illinois!

For more, http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/09/illinois.govenor/index.htmlKBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05374114280698935635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-80873991586208417032008-12-04T10:43:00.007-06:002008-12-04T17:49:32.551-06:00Prop 8: The Musical

Way too funny, but sadly true.

Also, new layout obviously. We have all worked very hard for the past weeks, months, and some of the past year. I have to steal a quote from Michelle Obama is stating for the first time in my life I am proud of my country. I feel for the first time in my life my generation has a renewed vigor in the political process behind Barack Obama. I feel racial inequality has finally had a chance to be cast aside for the most powerful position in this nation's government. Millions have taken an active part in a poltical campaign through both donations of money, but more importantly time. As I stated in my last post I was able to see the youth who cannot even vote stepping up and doing their part for their country.

This is what America is supposed to be. One transcending race, creed, age, and gender to put the best interests of this country and the rest of the world first. Our ability in this country to care for our fellow citizens if one thing which I feel set us apart from the rest of the world. We have an opportunity to continue this legacy tomorrow in the voting booth as we cast out ballots. But it cannot stop there.

Tomorrow will be a long day, a stressful day, but more importantly a day to make history. We can never forget this as we are dragging people to the polls and making sure they do their most precious of civic duties tomorrow. We must put our whole heart into it as we only have 33 hours left in this campaign, a campaign with one common goal, to change our nation. So now I leave you with the words of a man who is much more eloquent in his words than I ever wish to be.

"America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for. Not with an economy to fix and cities to rebuild and farms to save. Not with so many families to protect and so many lives to mend. America, we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise - that American promise - and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess"

-Sen. Its been stressful, many times asking myself is it worth it. But now I look at this as the final mile of a marathon much as how I feel many supporters and volunteers may feel right now. We have worked so hard to reach this point but were are in the final stages of what this election season has become and we cannot let up.

2 years ago I would have never thought that I would have had the experiences I have had in the past months volunteering and working in the office to make a change. It sounds corny but I really think this will be one of my fondest memories. I have made some of the best friends and met some of the most amazing people ever since getting involved.

Today down at the office I had renewed hope in what I am working towards. There was a first time volunteer who came into the office today. He was wearing his Obama '08 t-shirt and looking forward to doing what he could. This may not sound out of the ordinary at first, but he was 14. He is unable to vote and will not be able to vote until 2012, yet he still finds Barack Obama to be a captivating person, enough so that he will take time out of his weekend to make phone calls in our last push before election day.

No matter how stressed out I may become, or disheartened by the tedious work, I cannot stop running for this last mile or everything I had worked for in the last months will be all for nothing. This is way to important of an event in history to take a back seat to in the final stages of this race. I will do my best to make sure people get the chance to make the difference they so desire by being able to vote November 4th. This is the only thing we have right now in our power to end the silence of the people for the last 4 years and tell not only the country but also the world that we are striving for change, we need to be better, and that no matter what, the inner strength of the American people cannot and will not be deterred.

Because of my experience I feel that my vote now counts more than just one time, it is also counted for the countless who live in this country who cannot vote due to age, criminal status, or other disenfranchisement of a voter. They are Americans too and I want you realize that your vote is not just your vote, it is a vote for everyone who cannot cast their ballot. If not for your sake, do it for theirs. While our Republican friend occasionally fumbled for words and rather often failed to produce new arguments, Chris brought out fresh material on every question and was an honorable representation of our future President Obama.

And now, pictures!

Chris zinging the middle class... Not only has the RNC tried to link Sen. Obama to Bill Ayers actions, now through the cover of this mailer, they are showing a connection to 9/11. I thought Rudi was out of the race.

I will not let an election get lost due to fear. This needs to be stopped at all levels. And since Powell is a highly respected Republican and former decorated general and Secretary of State, if McCain now tries to question Obama on national security he will in turn be questioning Powell as well.

This, essentially, takes away one of McCain's biggest arguments, and also will help sway those undecided votes who also questioned Obama's strength on national security.

On behalf of all Obama supporters....I thank you Gen. Yes, their allegations shape the perceptions of the conservative wing-nuts who can't process a logical thought on their own, so the mere mention of the word "terrorist" in an ad with Obama wires their brains to that despicable assumption.

That's the problem I have with many McCain supporters, the ones I see at rallies and town halls booing their own candidate when he tries to tell them to respect Senator Obama and the ones who believe, as my grandparents do, that he is inferior because of the color of his skin.

Racism, sexism, homophobia... all are a result of ignorance. In this day and age where anyone can access books, computers, and newspapers, there is no excuse for it. Fear and judgment of other classes of people stems from a forced ignorance, a willful lack of education, or at the very least, an utterly twisted selective perception.

What gets to me about the monkey-man is that he obviously knows he is wrong, or he wouldn't hide the toy from the camera. But his shame and embarassment at being called out for his inhuman behavior will not be enough to make him understand just how wrong he is.

People like that - people who judge Obama not on his politics but on his race, people who are too incompetent to understand the stakes of this election - do not deserve to have a leader who will succumb to their hatred. We need a new vision for America, where we are united as one people, where Americans will invest in their country and educate themselves, so we can overcome these barriers that are so disheartening in this decade.

We are well on our way, but there is more work to be done! Democrats must be elected to offices in the senate, the house, and of course the Presidency, to ensure that we can put our government back in the hands of the people beneath a great leader who will unite us and fulfill the promise of the United States of America.KBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05374114280698935635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-59989154872418425922008-10-11T16:09:00.002-05:002008-10-12T01:05:59.923-05:00Palin Abuses Power...But Still Within Her AuthorityYesterday, the final ruling on the "troopergate" scandal, involving VP nominee Sarah Palin, was released by the Alaskan Legislature and concluded that Palin did abuse her authority. There is no way I can let this go past me for another week or else I might just snap and kill an elephant the next time I'm at the zoo. The latest barrage of attacks by the McCain campaign relating Obama to Bill Ayers, citing his lack of patriotism to the point of calling him treasonous, and never letting up on such attacks is deplorable. I do not care if you are a republican or democrat, conservative or liberal, atheist or fundamentalist; you do not allow your crowds to say what they have said in the past few days.

It has been reported that in recent rallies for John McCain, when the attacks start and the mud starts flinging against Barack Obama, the crowd has begun to chant and yell out, "Kill him" and "Get him". Its common sense you do not say that about anyone on a political campaign, but when you do not denounce what is said and even pass the buck to lying in the sole responsibility to the crowd, you are running on the same mindset of a Nazi during the Nuremberg Trials. McCain has stated he cannot control what the crowd says, but he can be against what was said. Hmm, sounds like a familiar quote from only a few years ago.

In 1978, Bill Pierce wrote a book titled The Turner Diaries. The book revolves about a radical group who starts up a second American Revolution where the government is overthrown, and all non-white races and non-Christians are purged from America. One event in the book depicts the group bombing of the FBI headquarters in Washington, DC. A Turner Diaries inspired attack happened in Oklahoma City, OK on April 19, 2005. Tim McVeigh who was an open white supremacist with ties to the National Alliance (Bill Pierce's neo-Nazi organization) was the man who was behind the bombings. When he was arrested, McVeigh had a copy of the Turner Diaries in his possession. There are many other events which have been inspired by this book, but I don't have that much time to type.

Now you may be asking why I brought up Oklahoma City. Pierce after the attack stated, "No. No, I don't. I've—I've said that over and over again, that I do not approve of the Oklahoma City bombing." He blamed the action solely McVeigh and blames him completely while failing to notice the distinct connection between his own book and McVeigh's actions. Whether or not you approve of the action after it occurs does not matter. The fact you brought about that possibility and did nothing to stop it makes you as guilty as the person who set off that detonator.

So now I say to you John McCain, by inciting phrases of "Kill Him" and "Get him" at your rallies you will be just as guilty as the person who may try to inflict any harm on Senator Barack Obama. Last time I checked, angry mobs were not a showing of democracy. You love to make reference to your military past as your qualifications for president, well senator, this is conduct unbecoming an officer. You should be ashamed of yourself to even bring these possibilities of discussion onto the table whether you meant it or not. The African-American community has seen too many of its great leaders lost to hate, and by that thought even coming up in the race for president takes you to a new low I still cannot realize. Assassination is the black eye of American politics and too many great leaders have been lost too soon due to that blind hatred. That type of discussion does not make you the American hero you used to be to me. I had the utmost respect for you and what you had done in your career, but that John McCain is gone to me now. For your sake I pray to God that nothing happens Sen. Obama, because if it does, you will be Bill Pierce looking back at Oklahoma City.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-84886393215347541342008-10-08T10:06:00.002-05:002008-10-08T10:18:35.986-05:00Another WIN for Barack Obama
The talking heads are saying McCain needed a "game-changer" to win last night's debate, and it didn't happen - ergo, win to Senator Obama.

It's true that a game-changer didn't happen, because all we heard from John McCain was more of the same. Misleading smears about Barack's record and even some flat-out lies, while Barack openly and honestly defended his own record.

From the CNN.com fact checker on last night's debate....

1. Barack Obama claimed that business groups are rejecting McCain's health plan.
The verdict: TRUE.

2. Barack Obama alleged that John McCain claimed the Iraq war would be easy and short, and that this showed poor judgment.
The verdict: TRUE.

3. McCain claimed that Obama voted 94 times to raise taxes.
The verdict: MISLEADING. (many of those votes did raise taxes for a small number of Americans, but while giving tax cuts to many more)

4. McCain said that Obama has never taken on his party leaders.
The verdict: FALSE.

5. Obama pointed out that McCain's support for a Fannie/Freddie reformation bill was not a bill he authored, and the bill did not even pass.
The verdict: TRUE.

6. McCain claimed that Obama had the second-most donations from Frannie and Freddie in all of history.
The verdict: MISLEADING. (The donations come from employees of the company, and besides, Obama may have received more donations overall, but McCain has recieved more from them during this election cycle.)

If I'm counting right, that's Obama 6, McCain 0. Anyone calling this a "narrow victory" ought to check the facts.KBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05374114280698935635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10143711.post-54972910855092623852008-10-07T15:36:00.002-05:002008-10-07T15:55:51.360-05:00My Rant of the Week: Vol 1
Ok so this is something which has been on my mind for weeks now. I have been out, along with many other ISU Dems, registering people to vote. We are constantly yelling at people asking if they are registered and for some reason we keep getting a response from a select few. "No thanks". Are you freakin kidding me? That is not an acceptable answer to the question. I'm not giving you a free coke or year old chewing gum.

It boiled over to a point yesterday. Here is a summarized transcript of the conversation

Me: Are you registered to vote? Tomorrow is the deadline.
Student: No, I'm good
Me: So you're registered?
Student: No I don't care about it
Me: Really?
Student: It doesn't affect me
Me: Of course it does, whats your major?
Student: Education
Me: So do you care about properly funded schools, No Child Left Behind, proper pay for teachers?
Student: Yeah
Me: So you should vote so you have a say in those types of issues
Student: It can't change through voting
To which the student started to walk away
Me: Don't let apathy destroy our country

Was it offensive? Not as offensive as someone who should be extremely active in the community because as an educator, thats your job. I get so sick of people who complain about things with this country, yet when they have their chance, they say, who cares. My grandfather didn't fight in WWII for apathy. My friends who have served and are still serving in Iraq didn't fight and die for apathy.

Do they have the right to not vote. Of course they do. But when you say it can't change through voting, you lose my respect. We have a chance everytime we walk into a polling booth to change our country and that is starting with who is in charge. Silence does not bring strength as Big Brother would have told you in "1984", it beings about tyanny and when the people of this country do not speak out in defiance when it is neccessary, we have lost what it means to be the country we are.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
